Turbocharged DDoS Mitigation: Ovum Reports on Neustar’s Partnership with Limelight Networks

Neustar, Inc. (NYSE: NSR), a trusted, neutral provider of real-time information services, today released details of a new report by leading business intelligence provider, Ovum. The report highlights that Neustar’s recent partnership with Limelight Networks will dramatically increase the size and capacity of infrastructure used to power Neustar’s DDoS protection service, growing from 1.2Tbps to 10Tbps across 27 global locations.

Written by Ovum senior analyst Rik Turner and titled, “Neustar forms partnership with Limelight for turbocharged DDoS mitigation,” the report also emphasizes that the DDoS protection service will provide customers with a powerful combination of high performance and high capacity scrubbing during DDoS attacks. The large number of points of presence (PoPs) will reduce business operations risks while increasing the speed to normal operating states. These PoPs will act as in-region mitigation centers allowing Neustar to redirect traffic to local scrubbing centers at the edge of the network, closer to the source rather than having to be backhauled to a regional scrubbing center that may be halfway around the world.

“With this partnership, Neustar is responding to the growth in the average size of DDoS attacks, and in particular the emergence of the gigantic volumetric attacks that we have seen in recent years, which have put pressure on traditional DDoS mitigation infrastructure,” commented Turner. “With Limelight, Neustar now has the capacity to address these monster attacks without adding significant latency to customers’ traffic in the process.”

In addition, the report draws attention to the fact that, unlike other DDoS services that typically mitigate in a two-step process relying on network routers to perform an initial filter, the Neustar DDoS mitigation service powered by Limelight, once activated, scrubs all incoming traffic. Turner reports that Neustar and Limelight champion this approach because it releases the routers to do what they are primarily designed to do, directing traffic quickly, without incurring traditional performance risks by overburdening them with filtering.
