CONAGUA resolution confirms no remediation required as a result of the overflow of contingency pond at the San Jose Mine, Mexico in October 2018
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, March 28, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fortuna Silver Mines Inc. (NYSE: FSM) (TSX: FVI) is pleased to report that the Mexican National Water Commission (CONAGUA) has completed its investigation and issued a resolution into the overflow of the contingency pond at the dry stack tailings facility at the San Jose Mine on October 8, 2018, which was caused by heavy seasonal rains (refer to Fortuna news release dated October 11, 2018). CONAGUA’s resolution confirms that no remediation of the nearby Coyote Creek is required. However, the Company received a fine of approximately US$42,000 related to the incident.
The Company has since installed additional pumping equipment, increased its monitoring system and reinforced the pipes and drainage channels from the dry stack facility to the contingency pond in order to mitigate the risk of an overflow in the event of abnormally high rainfall in the future.
The Company reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of the environment, local communities and our workforce.
